Azathioprine and Mercaptopurine

HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT?

A number of studies show thiopurines help maintain remission in both CD and UC. Research into CD has shown that azathioprine and mercaptopurine can also help bring on remission in active CD, help maintain this remission, and support steroid reduction.

Some studies have suggested thiopurines may prevent flare-ups for people with CD after they have had surgery, although more recent research has shown there is little clear evidence that this is the case. While there is less research looking at the use of thiopurines in UC, studies do show that thiopurines may prevent flare-ups and help maintain remission. Thiopurines are also associated with a lower likelihood of surgery in patients with severe UC treated with ciclosporin (immunosuppressant drug) to bring on remission.
